Public Works Director

The public works director is responsible for providing managerial leadership in the City's Public Works Department. Trains and directs Public Works employees to perform various maintenance and improvement projects in support of city utilities, streets and other areas of responsibility as directed. 

Public Works Director responsibilities include:

  • Evaluate all public works projects and determine course of action. Use best practices to schedule and direct projects to completion within budgetary guidelines and in a timely manner.
  • Participate in the interviewing, hiring, and job evaluations for public works employees.
  • Schedule and ensure completion of all training, including safety training required to maintain and/or acquire certifications and licenses for employees. Maintain training, licensing and certification documentation as required.
  • Direct and leads city crew in daily operation, maintenance, and repair of city water system, sewer system. streets and city parks.
  • Oversee and participate in the development and administration of the public works department budget; approve the forecast of funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies; approve expenditure and implement budgetary adjustments as appropriate and necessary.
  • Operate specialized equipment including, but no limited to, tractor, commercial dump truck, street sweeper, roller and backhoe.
  • Direct and train employees in the use of specialized equipment including commercial generator, sewer jet, sewer camera, weed trimmers, tree trimmers, snow removal and other equipment as necessary.
  • Supervise monthly water meter readings to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
  • Supervise designated employee(s) to perform testing, maintain logs and operate equipment at the water treatment facility and ensure completions of required report to Department of Health/Health District.
  • Maintain inventory of public works equipment and supplies and condition of the city s assets.
  • Prepare relevant documents and bids for materials and services including public works projects and engineering projects.
  • Liaise with city engineer, contractors, county and state officials to ensure all projects are completed within budgetary limits and in a timely manner.
  • Read, interpret, apply federal, state, and local policies. Communicate these policies clearly to employees and city administration.
  • May be required to organize crew, and work outside normal business hours for emergencies.
